Etsy listing photos: official sizes + checklist (2026)

Last updated: May 21, 2026

Etsy gives sellers 10 photo slots per listing and a wide latitude on what to put in them. Most shops use 3–4 and leave conversion on the table. This guide is the 2026 reference: official Etsy listing photo sizes, the 10-slot strategy top shops use, file format rules, SEO basics for alt text, and a 12-item pre-publish checklist you can run through before hitting list.

Etsy listing photo sizes: the official 2026 specs

Etsy displays listing photos at 2000 × 2000 px in the zoom view and at much smaller sizes everywhere else (search thumbnails, mobile carousel, A+ blocks). The specs:

  • Recommended dimensions: 2000 × 2000 px. This is the size Etsy displays at full zoom.
  • Minimum dimensions: no hard minimum, but anything under 1000 px will look soft on Retina displays.
  • Maximum file size: 20 MB per image.
  • Accepted formats: JPG, PNG, GIF. WebP is not yet supported on Etsy seller uploads as of 2026.
  • Aspect ratio: 1:1 (square) is safest. Etsy crops non-square images to square thumbnails in search.
  • Color profile: sRGB. Etsy converts on upload but starting in sRGB prevents shifts.
  • Maximum images per listing: 10 photos + 1 video.

The 10-slot Etsy listing photo strategy

Top Etsy shops use all 10 slots intentionally. The proven order:

Slot 1 — thumbnail. The single most important photo on the entire listing. This is what shows in search results. Make it the cleanest, most marketplace-friendly shot. Most top shops use a styled product-on-neutral-background here.

Slot 2 — scale shot. Product held in hand, on a wrist, in a doorway. Buyers underestimate size constantly; the scale shot is the single biggest source of returns when missing.

Slots 3–5 — lifestyle / styled context. Product in use, in a styled space, paired with complementary items. This is where buyers mentally fit the item into their life.

Slot 6 — detail / texture close-up. Stitching, grain, hardware, finish. Crucial for jewelry, ceramics, textiles, leather.

Slot 7 — packaging shot if you do gift packaging. Drives AOV.

Slots 8–10 — variant shots (colors, sizes) or process / behind-the-scenes (Etsy buyers love this).

Etsy listing photo backgrounds: what converts

Etsy's algorithm doesn't enforce white backgrounds the way Amazon does — and lifestyle backgrounds outperform clean cutouts on most Etsy categories.

What works on Etsy in 2026: Premium Beige and Nature scenes for handmade ceramics, candles, soap, and clean-beauty; Luxury Marble for fine jewelry and high-end accessories; Urban for leather goods, streetwear, and tool/hardware crafts; styled flat-lays on linen or wood for textiles and home goods.

What doesn't: pure white on every photo (looks generic and marketplace-style on Etsy), busy domestic backgrounds with personal items (lowers perceived professionalism), and any photo where the product is photographed on an unmade bed or carpet (universal Etsy faux pas).

Etsy listing photo file formats and compression

JPG at quality 85–90 is the workhorse format. PNG only for items that require transparency or have flat graphic elements (digital downloads, stickers).

Etsy's CDN re-compresses uploads, so over-compressing yourself (saving at JPG quality 60) bakes in artifacts that Etsy's pipeline can't recover. Save at quality 85 or above, let Etsy handle delivery compression.

WebP is not yet supported on the Etsy seller upload flow as of 2026 — even though Etsy serves WebP to compatible browsers via their CDN. If you use an AI tool that exports WebP (Palmou AI does by default), convert to JPG before uploading. Squoosh.app is the fastest free option for batch conversion.

Etsy listing photo SEO: alt text and naming

Two SEO surfaces sellers underuse on Etsy:

Alt text. Etsy lets you add alt text per photo, which feeds both Etsy's internal search and Google Images. Write what's in the photo ("silver pendant necklace on white marble") rather than your keyword stack ("silver necklace gift birthday wedding"). Keyword-stuffed alt text gets devalued by both Etsy and Google.

File naming. Less impactful than alt text but still indexed. Name files descriptively: silver-pendant-necklace-1.jpg beats IMG_2451.jpg. Use hyphens, not underscores, not spaces.

Etsy listing photo mistakes that hurt your shop

The patterns that show up in every "why aren't my Etsy listings converting" thread:

  • Using fewer than 4 photos. Listings with 4+ photos convert at ~1.5× the rate of 1–2 photo listings.
  • Watermarks or shop logos on photos. Etsy doesn't ban them but buyers find them unprofessional and skip the listing.
  • Heavy filters or oversaturation. Returns spike when the colour in the photo doesn't match what arrives.
  • First photo is a flat-lay context shot, not a clean product shot. The thumbnail decides the click; lead with the product.
  • Photos taken at night with phone flash. Universal Etsy faux pas; signals low-effort listing.
  • Inconsistent background colour across the 10 photos. Looks unprofessional. Pick one scene and reuse it for the primary across SKUs.

Pre-publish checklist: 12 items before you hit list

Run through this before publishing any Etsy listing:

  • Photo 1 is 2000 × 2000 px square.
  • Photo 1 has a clean background or one consistent styled scene.
  • Photos 2–6 cover: scale, lifestyle context, detail close-up.
  • Photo for any flaw is included (vintage/used items).
  • All photos are JPG, not WebP.
  • Colours look the same across the 10 photos (consistent edit).
  • Alt text is descriptive on every photo, not keyword-stuffed.
  • File names are descriptive (silver-necklace-1.jpg, not IMG_*).
  • No watermarks, no shop logos on the photos.
  • No mirror selfies, no faces, no fingers in the frame.
  • Photos display correctly on mobile preview (Etsy app or responsive mode).
  • Listing video uploaded (if applicable) — converts at ~2× the rate of video-less listings.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best Etsy listing photo size in 2026?
2000 × 2000 px square. Etsy displays at this size in the zoom view, so anything larger gets re-encoded for no benefit, and anything smaller looks soft on Retina displays. The hard ceiling is 20 MB per file.
Does Etsy accept WebP product photos?
Not on the seller upload flow as of 2026. Convert WebP to JPG quality 85+ before uploading. Etsy serves WebP/AVIF to compatible browsers via their CDN, but the input must be JPG, PNG, or GIF.
How many photos should an Etsy listing have?
All 10 if you can fill them meaningfully. Listings with 4+ photos convert at ~1.5× the rate of 1–2 photo listings, and the marginal return holds up to 10 photos on Etsy (unlike Vinted where it flattens at 6). Use the slots: thumbnail, scale, lifestyle ×3, detail, packaging, variants.
Can I use AI-generated backgrounds on Etsy listings?
Yes. Etsy's policies allow image enhancement (color, background, scene) as long as the product itself is represented accurately. Image-to-image AI scene generation preserves the product exactly; only the surrounding scene changes. Handmade and vintage shops use this widely in 2026.
What's the best background color for Etsy listing photos?
Depends on category. Premium Beige and Nature work for handmade ceramics, candles, soap, and clean-beauty. Luxury Marble for fine jewelry and high-end accessories. Urban for leather and tool/hardware crafts. Pure white works but looks generic on Etsy — buyers expect more aesthetic warmth than Amazon-style marketplace neutrality.
