Shopify product photo size guide: what to upload in 2026

Last updated: May 15, 2026

Shopify accepts a wide range of image sizes, but only a narrow band actually performs well across mobile, desktop, theme zoom, and storefront grids. This guide is the 2026 reference for sizing your Shopify product photos — what to upload, what to avoid, and the small details that affect Core Web Vitals (and therefore search ranking).

The short answer

Upload at 2048 × 2048 px. Use JPG or WebP. Keep file size under 500 KB if possible (1 MB hard cap as a sanity rule). Use square (1:1) aspect ratio for product page primaries. That's the version of this guide you can stop reading after.

Shopify's full image specs (2026)

Officially supported limits:

  • Maximum dimensions: 5760 × 5760 px
  • Maximum file size: 20 MB
  • Accepted formats on upload: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC (HEIC auto-converted)
  • Output formats served: WebP, AVIF, or JPG depending on browser
  • Color profile: sRGB (Shopify will convert; uploading sRGB avoids drift)
  • Recommended for zoom: 2048 × 2048 px minimum
  • Recommended for Retina: at least 2× the largest display size

Why 2048 × 2048 is the sweet spot

Shopify's CDN automatically generates srcset variants from your upload — 1024px, 1500px, 2048px, etc. The largest variant served is your upload size. If you upload 800 × 800, zoom-on-hover and Retina display fall back to the source and look soft. If you upload 5000 × 5000, your CDN bills and page weight balloon for no gain — Shopify won't serve anything larger than 2048 × 2048 in most theme contexts.

2048 × 2048 gives you Retina-quality on mobile (where most product browsing happens), enables theme zoom features without falling back, and stays under typical CDN cost thresholds.

Aspect ratio: square wins

Square (1:1) aspect ratio is the safest choice for Shopify product photos in 2026:

  • All major themes (Dawn, Sense, Trade, Studio, paid Shopify themes) optimize their product grids for 1:1.
  • Search results and collection thumbnails crop non-square images, often awkwardly.
  • Mobile product galleries swipe in square chunks; landscape and portrait look cropped.
  • Instagram and Pinterest share workflows expect square — saves you re-exporting per channel.

File size targets

Shopify uses Core Web Vitals scores in their merchant guidance and Google uses them for ranking. The metric that matters most for product pages is Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which on a product page is almost always your primary product image.

Targets for the primary image:

  • Under 200 KB: excellent. LCP under 2.5s on 4G is reliably achievable.
  • 200–500 KB: good. Most stores live here.
  • 500 KB–1 MB: borderline. Mobile LCP risk on slower networks.
  • Above 1 MB: hurts ranking and conversion measurably. Audit and re-export.

WebP vs JPG in 2026

Shopify serves WebP automatically to browsers that support it (which is now 96%+ of traffic). You can upload either format — Shopify re-encodes anyway. But uploading WebP yourself has two practical wins:

1. Smaller upload size means faster bulk catalog migrations.

2. You skip Shopify's re-encoding step, which occasionally introduces minor artifacts on flat color regions (gradients, logos).

Upload WebP quality 90+ if you have it. JPG quality 85+ works equally well in the wild.

The 5 sizing mistakes that hurt conversion

From auditing dozens of Shopify stores:

  • Uploading at 800 × 800 'because the theme renders smaller'. Zoom fails. Retina looks soft.
  • Mixing aspect ratios across SKUs on the same collection page. Grid looks chaotic.
  • Uploading 6000 × 6000 'just in case'. Shopify doesn't serve at that size; you pay CDN cost for nothing.
  • Keeping default Shopify alt text ('image of product'). Hurts SEO and accessibility.
  • Forgetting the 'order matters' rule: position 1 is your thumbnail across the entire store and search.

Generating spec-compliant images with Palmou AI

Palmou AI's cutout flow preserves your source resolution — drop a 4K phone photo, get a 4K transparent PNG. That clears Shopify's 2048 × 2048 recommendation comfortably. Scene-generation output is square WebP at ~1024 px (good for grid thumbnails) — for the primary image, use the cutout flow and composite on white if you need higher resolution.

For a full Shopify catalog migration: 1 credit per image, 100 images on the $19/mo Starter plan, full commercial license. The Agency plan ($99/mo) includes API access for programmatic bulk processing.
